Seattle painter featured at Hallie FordA retrospective exhibition of work by Michael Dailey, a Seattle painter, opens June 7 and continues through August 31 at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University. Dailey, a professor emeritus of the University of Washington is an abstract painter who mainly features landscapes in his work.
"Michael Dailey: Color, Light, Time, and Place" features 20 paintings and 24 works on paper spanning a 45-year period. His earlier works depict mountains, forests, and rock formations. When diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the early 1970s he made the switch from oils to acrylics, as his canvases shrunk to accommodate his challenges. As an abstract artist Dailey's landscapes focus on the elements of light and color, focusing on horizons and atmospheres.
Dailey and Museum Director John Olbrantz will lead a discussion of the painter's life and art on June 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Roger Hull Lecture Hall prior to the reception to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the lobby and galleries.
Summer Art Camps for kids
Salem Art Association is offering children's art summer camps at Bush's Pasture Park this summer. Starting June 16, children ages 6 to 15 can participate in a variety of outdoor activities held in the Bush Barn Art Annex in two-week and one-week sessions held through August 29. Split into two separate ages groups, students will have the opportunity to gain new skills and learn to express their creativity through crafts, gallery visits, and drama exercises lead by professional artists.
Each session will boast a different theme. Art in the Park is designed for those ages 6-11. Emphasis will be placed on the artistic process, encouraging individual style through practice, and appreciation of the masters, according to the Salem Art Association Web site.
Art Attack is the name of the camp for children who are 12. According to the Web site, campers will study the techniques and styles of famous artists while continuing to develop their own personal style.
Students will also be able to work collaboratively on larger projects with other artists. For specific dates and pricing, visit the Bush Barn Art Center or www.SalemArt.org.
