First Wednesdays begin in MaySpring is here, which means birds chirping, flowers blooming and Salem streets swarming with First Wednesday patrons. Each First Wednesday celebration comes with a theme that is meant to influence the creative spark in those who wish to participate. The hours of each event are still 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
May 7 - "Downtown's Blooming"
June 4 - "Always a Picnic Downtown" (featuring dog days)
July 2 - "Spirit of America"
August 6 - "Dancing in the Streets"
September 3 - "Back to School"
October 1 - "Harvest Bounty"
November 5 - "Thankful Giving"
December 3 - "Holiday Traditions"
These themes are intended to inspire, but it is not required for artists or groups to dedicate to that theme. Artists are encouraged to display their work in the local businesses or on the sidewalks. Groups that wish to participate may use the themes as a starter for their own message.
Contact Suzie Bicknell at suzibicknell@godowntownsalem.com for more information. Artists wanting to know who and when to contact downtown businesses can go to salemfirstwednesday@gmail.com and request SFW business information.
Small-town festival good for artists
Artists who would like to be involved in a local art fair can get experience without a lot of time or expense. The Dallas Art Association sponsors Art In The Park on July 27. This is the last day of the Dallas Summerfest held at the city park.
This festival is well attended and features many local artists and crafters selling their work. Currently there are 40 spaces measuring 12 x12 available, but there is room to expand. The fee is only $20 for the one-day event. Tents are not required, but are recommended. Set-up begins at 6 a.m. and takedown begins at 4 p.m.
For an application contact Sally Clark at (503) 623-0809 or Joan Scherf (503) 623-3761.
Applications must be received by June 20. New participants must be approved by jury.
