"Atonement"
There's a lot to say about Keira Knightley returning to her "Pride and Prejudice" style. And while it was critically acclaimed and nominated for its fair share of awards, there wasn't a whole lot of buzz about the movie outside of those circles. This film's story spans several decades starting in 1935 when 13-year-old writer Briony Tallis, played by Saoirse Ronan and her family live a life of privilege. Briony's older sister played by Keira Knightley declares her love for the family's housekeeper's son. This event takes the family down a long path towards ... atonement. Go figure.
"Enchanted"
Disney knows how to make money with fairy tale power. "Enchanted" is a hybrid cartoon/live action movie with the adorable Amy Adams playing the princess in both forms. For our full review of the theatrical release, check out: Enchanted lives happily ever after
"I am Legend"
"The Omega Man" goes Big Willy. Will Smith gets some cred for being able to carry a movie with a cast of basically himself and flesh eating zombies. There are some weird scenes where Smith is building a small society of mannequins that he talks to. But no one mocked Tom Hanks for talking to a volleyball in "Castaway."
"Love in the Time of Cholera"
Based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, this love story spans a lifetime in South America at the turn of the century. This film had a small theatrical release. Newly dubbed Oscar winner Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiomo, and Benjamin Bratt get top bill.
"The Seeker"
Based on the novel by Susan Cooper. The film tells the story of Will Stanton, a boy who learns he's the last of a group of warriors fighting the forces of the Dark. Traveling back and forth through time, Will finds clues that lead him to an epic battle of good and evil.
"Southland Tales"
The latest film from Donnie Darko creator Richard Kelly takes place in LA in the year 2008. An action star stricken with amnesia meets up with a porn star who is developing her own reality television show. Meanwhile a police officer holds the key to a vast conspiracy. It's hard to describe a Richard Kelly movie, so let's say that Dwayne Johnson is the action star and Sarah Michelle Gellar is the porn star. Yes, Buffy herself is a porn star.
