Over 65 restaurants across the state will donate 15 percent of today's gross proceeds to Basic Rights Oregon in a fundraiser labeled "Bites for Rights." Basic Rights Oregon is a group of Oregon citizens who are "committed to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity." They were founded in 2000, and this year's Bites for Rights fundraiser will be its ninth."This year, we're encouraging folks to `make a day of it'," said BRO Development Coordinator Juan Martinez, "and to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even happy-hour out as a way to have fun while building local community and supporting fair-minded businesses."
Basic Rights Oregon has partnered with restaurants mainly located around the Portland Metro area. But Bend, Salem, Eugene, Corvallis, Ashland, and Astoria also have participating partners. There is only a single restaurant participating in Salem, Cascade Baking Company, which is located downtown at 229 State St. They open up at 7 a.m. during the week. For more information on what they have available, check out their Web site at cascadebaking.com
The fundraising will take place all day Thursday, June 19.
"This year's theme, Be Full, Be Proud, is no coincidence," Martinez said, "as Bites for Rights is always the Thursday after PRIDE. There is a strong connection between being proud AND supporting your community, and Bites for Rights is simply one great example of how to do that."
The full list of restaurants participating all over the state is online at bitesforrights.com.
