"City of Men"Fernando Meirelles has a penchant for movies with "City of" in the title. His first film "City of God" was nominated for an Academy Award. Now the follow-up "City of Men" is out on DVD. "City of Men" follows a family on the streets of Rio de Janiero. Cultural divides, gang violence, and estranged fathers lay in the wake. The DVD is complete with a three disc set containing behind-the-scenes bonus features.
"Drillbit Taylor"
This story has been told so many times that the synopsis could be hundreds of movies. Three high school freshmen hire a homeless soldier of fortune (Owen Wilson) to help them face off against the school bully.
"Vantage Point"
Eight strangers with eight different points of view try to piece together the truth behind the president's assassination. William Hurt plays the man of the White House, while Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox star as Secret Service agents assigned to protect him. We have a full review of the theatrical release at Vantage Point is off the mark.
"Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns"
Hey, look! Another movie in which Tyler Perry dresses up in drag and gets all mean. A single mother living in Chicago is having a hard time keeping her life together. At the worst possible time she gets laid off and starts losing hope. But then a great thing happens -- she gets a letter telling her that her long-lost father has died. BAM! Instant family at a funeral. Perry seems to combine slapstick comedy with the most serious encounter that his characters could go through. It's like watching as a kid tries to kick a heroin habit, but when his grandpa slips on a banana peel, everything is just fine.
