`Cloverfield' is shaky, yet solid

It's always ominous when a movie theater puts up a warning sign at the ticket booth about motion sickness.

Such was the case with "Cloverfield," which debuted this weekend with a record breaking gross of $41 million.

The movie begins through the perspective of a shaky handheld camera. A man is filming a celebratory party when there is a commotion outside and suddenly New York City is under siege. The cameraman captures the whole thing and "Cloverfield" is born.

If you get motion sickness, drink a lot of water, take some Dramamine, and get to the theater early so you can snag a seat near the back (or the door as the case may be).

The special effects of the monster are not anything that we haven't seen before. The groundbreaking that was done in this movie was only in the narrative, not the plot or the special effects.

The most disturbing part of the movie is the role the audience plays. When we see "Godzilla" eat people, it's almost comical. But the reality of watching someone who just watched someone get eaten is horrific.

Parts of the movie are reminiscent of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. At one point the group enters a New York convenience store, which is similar to a video that was released around that time of someone's amateur 9/11 footage.

Unfortunately the opportunity to say something profound about society is completely ignored.

Stay after the credits for a small sound byte that is being heavily debated. Use the comment area on this site to post your opinion.

Cloverfield is rated PG-13 and is playing at Regal Lancaster Mall Stadium 11.
