The term "generation gap" first sprang into existence with the rise of the Baby Boomers, but half a century later the great divide between the young and old doesn't appear to have gotten any smaller. Salem in particular is a city with a long-standing disconnect between the generations; the older establishment often holds a general distrust of teenagers and twenty-somethings, and the disenfranchised youth become frustrated from being pigeonholed. Freddy Ruiz, who put together the new local compilation CD, "Don't Blame the Kids" is obvously well aware of this. Ruiz, a mover and shaker in the Salem arts scene, is the creator of Redcrownreview.com, a showcase of entertainment listings, regional CD and show reviews and an open forum for others to share their thoughts on the ups and downs of culture in the mid-Willamette Valley.
"I've only been in the scene for a little while," says Ruiz. "Jimi's Guitar Planet and watching the Apheliotropic Orchestra's last show at the Columbus Club were really inspiring for me to get more involved in the Salem scene."
From the galloping modern rock of "Come Back Maggie" to the glossy hip hop flavor of Garden Entertainment, "Don't Blame The Kids" is a fun and diverse collection of Northwest music.
Distinguished Salem acts like The Funhouse Strippers, The Nodding Tree Remedies and Quandry also get their chance to shine on this satisfying CD sampler.
Not one to mince words, Ruiz says the best trait of the Salem music scene is that it's small enough to be noticed but there are really great, original bands. On the other hand, he also says that there's no support from the City or building owners.
