'Dorian the Remarkable Mr. Gray' set to make Los Angeles run

While reading Oscar Wilde's "Portrait of Dorian Gray" did you ever think, hey, this would be a GREAT operetta? Probably not. But at least one person had that very reaction.

Pentacle Theatre's Randy Bowser wrote and directed the musical "Dorian the Remarkable Mr. Gray," a musical based on Wilde's original story. It was performed April 18 to May 10 and received mixed reviews. Read WillametteLive's review here.  Most critics agreed on one thing: the show was definitely worth talking about.

The show was certainly sold to one audience member -- Michael Butler, a friend of Bowser's, and a producer from Los Angeles who is best known for bringing "Hair" to Broadway. Butler was extremely impressed with the show.

"The Pentacle Theatre is one of the best I have been to," he said. "Salem should be proud."
Butler has offered to remount "Dorian" in the LA area.

"I think it will be enjoyed by my audiences and it has sometime to say -- several things in fact depending on one's point of view," he said.
Bowser, who has been working on the piece for much of his life, is excited to see it move on to another venue.

"It's extremely gratifying to see that my work moved and affected people, often deeply," he said.
But there is definitely work cut out for both Butler and Bowser. According to Butler, the script will go through "forever changes" until opening night. Bowser will be on hand to help with those changes.

"A big benefit of seeing the show on Pentacle's stage was feeling out where cuts could be made, and I've already put together quite a list of possible changes," Bowser said. "I'm looking forward to the continued collaborative process, which is the essence of theatre, and which by its nature makes the process always ongoing."

Bowser also directed "Hair," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "The Pirates of Penzance" at Pentacle Theatre.

This was a very quiet blog site. Why? After all the broohaha over his show, the man himself is not discussed.

Dear Mr. Bowser,

Broadway producer Mort A Guffman will be attending your LA showing of "Dorian".  That is if he is not held up in a snow storm coming from New York in July.

Word has it that there will be "Dorian Gray" action figures and lunch boxes available for sale in the lobby at the LA premiere.
