There was only one truly low spot in tonight's performances, which was not surprising considering that musical songs are made with divas in mind and the weakest links of this year's Top Six indeed qualify. Tonight's performances were dramatic indeed and gave a couple of the lagging Idols, namely Syesha and Carly, a chance to remind everyone why they are on the show. Syesha Mercado ("One Rock `n Roll Too Many") Syesha started us off tonight with a bang. Finally we got to see some personality from this girl. She danced, she sang, she shook her booty. Is it enough to keep her around for another week? Perhaps. Her last few flat performances, coupled with the cursed first slot may work against her, but at least she'll go out on a good note.
Jason Castro ("Memories") I just knew we wouldn't get through the night without someone singing "Memories." Thankfully, it came from the cool, throaty voice of Jason Castro, rather than one of the annoying, yappy divas. "Memories" came off decent for Castro, although the judges didn't care for it. I say, the stranger the rendition on this timeworn classic the better.
Brooke White ("You Must Love Me") Brooke was like a shaky little Chihuahua tonight. I thought for sure she was going to fall apart after her false start, but unfortunately she didn't. The drama! The tears! Great new pick, VoteForTheWorst.com.
David Archuleta ("Think of Me") David came out with a cutesy, boy band version of this "Phantom of the Opera" classic. He seemed to make it work, but it was a bit on the boring side and, as Simon, said, completely forgettable.
Carly Smithson ("Jesus Christ Superstar") Well, we all know what Carly needs now - someone to tell her what song to sing. She started out with a slow, ballady song, but upon suggestion from Webber, switched to the more lighthearted "Jesus Christ Superstar" and - voila - for the first time in weeks she actually gave a halfway interesting performance.
David Cook ("Music of the Night") David Cook showed the ladies that he does, indeed, have a soft side. It worked; I STILL have goosebumps.
Tomorrow's Bottom Three will probably consist of Brooke White, Jason Castro and ... hmmm. I would normally say Syesha or Carly, but this time I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that in a surprise twist David Archuleta will be in the Bottom Three for the first time. Brooke has VoteForTheWorst.com backing her, and if that can keep her alive for another week, then it will be goodbye Jason.
