In Salem, Court Street is courting you

Board members, budgets, and bank accounts will come later, but for now a group of businesses on Court Street are banding together to entice consumers to shop on Court Street.

Their goal is simple.

"We're looking to find ways to entice people to come to the street," Janet Whitney from Le Shoe Boutique said. "We'd like the street to be a destination spot at times."

The group so far includes businesses like Lullu's Tutto Cucina, Le Shoe Boutique, Roy John Designer, Glance, and Venti's Cafe.

The group attempted a merger with a similar consortium, State Street Merchants, but the proposal was denied during a meeting on June 25.
It is expected that the Court Street group will follow a similar model as the State Street organization. They have discussed producing counter cards with a map of Court Street to help consumers find businesses of interest on the street. Another idea is donating a percentage of the group's sales to charity.

The group has already secured plans to decorate their storefronts in celebration of Independence Day. On July 2 (First Wednesday), a sidewalk sale will take place between Lullu's and Le Shoe Boutique with live music from Bluebonics. Yoga demonstrations are planned in front of Roy John Designer. In August the group hopes to be in full force, with plans being coordinated to match the theme of August's First Wednesday "Dancing in the Streets."
