After a three-year hiatus, Salem area artists will once again open their studios to the public. The Visual Artist Studio Tour will take place on September 29 and 30, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Each day will feature a different group of artists. The VAST Studio tour is a benefit for Artists in Action, a local nonprofit artist group. This fall, 18 artists and artisans have signed up. Also participating are three galleries: Blue Pepper Gallery, Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, River Gallery, and the Willamette Art Center in their new location at the State Fairgrounds. On Saturday, Willamette Art Center ceramic artists will be throwing pots for the Empty Bowls program during studio tour hours. The Empty Bowls program brings awareness about poverty-stricken families to the public.
The Salem Area Artists Studio Tour was started by the Artist's Services Committee of the Salem Arts Association. Diane Trevett, a Salem artist who organized the tour for five years with volunteer help, says that the largest number of artists ever included in the tour was around 32, with an estimated 600 visitors.
The last studio tour was run by the Salem Art Association in the fall of 2004. For specific site information visit www.vasttour.com, where you can purchase maps and see a list of participating artists and examples of their work. Visitors may also contact the artist reps at info@vasttour.com.
