Combine equal parts sunshine, estrogen and ABBA, and you have "Mamma Mia!"Meryl Streep leads the cast of Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan , Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, and Amanda Seyfried ("Mean Girls"). The film has Seyfried's character, Sophie inviting a trio of men that could be her estranged father to her wedding. Streep's character is faced with being reminded of her lost loves, while her daughter's wedding is approaching. On top of all that they occasionally burst into ABBA songs.
The cast offers only mediocre singing talent. Meryl Streep stands out as the best singer in the group with Pierce Brosnan sitting at the bottom of the list. Streep is believable in her singing and seems flexible with the campiness of the movie. The singing is over-the-top, and breaks down to karaoke in the final credit sequence.
Whenever Brosnan would sing his voice didn't seem to match his facial expression. The poor guy has a couple of duets with Streep, and she vocally overpowers him each time.
In a musical, the songs should work to push the plot forward. Many of the songs in "Mamma Mia!" halt the story completely and the combined dance numbers break even these seasoned actors out of character. An overabundance of choreography that includes large groups of extras dancing removes that emotional, and very personal, connection that a musical should bring to its audience. Unfortunately the story is lost completely amid these superfluous scenes and the ending fails completely.
If there had been a little less choreography, a couple of the pointless numbers removed, and a proper ending, this movie could have been up there with "Moulin Rouge" and "Chicago." Instead, we are left with a campy, whimsical flick that forgets the story while bouncing around to ABBA.
