Imagine that you're a child whose parents are struggling to make ends meet. For nine months of the year, you count on the lunch you receive at school for your major meal of the day. What do you do during the long summer months when that meal is not available? For children in certain parts of rural Marion and Polk counties who live with this reality, there's some help out there.Building on its Spring Break - No Hungry Child program, which served over 7,400 free lunches to children at 35 sites this year, Marion-Polk Food Share (MPFS) is now expanding to reach hungry children during the summer months. As an official Summer Food Service Program Sponsor, they will partner with the Oregon Department of Education/USDA to provide free learning-centered activities and food for children and teenagers between the ages of 1 and 18 who are at risk of hungry.
The lunches will be served at the following locations:
Silverton: 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Monday - Friday (June 16-August 22, 2008) at the Eugene Field Elementary School Gymnasium, 410 N. Water St.
Scotts Mills: 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Mon/Wed/Fri (June 16-August 22, 2008) at the Scotts Mills Elementary School Gymnasium, 805 First St.
Independence: 11:30am - 12:30pm, Monday - Friday (June 9-August 22, 2008) at the Henry Hill Elementary School Cafeteria, 750 S. Fifth St.
Jefferson: 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Monday - Thursday (June 23-August 22, 2008) at the Jefferson Middle School Cafeteria, 1344 N. Second St.
A nutritious variety of hot and cold lunches will be produced and packaged daily by Central School District Food Services for distribution to the four sites. All summer meal costs will be reimbursed through the Federal Summer Food Service Program.
