A Grammy winner among usMolly Barth, co-founder of the sextet "eighth blackbird," won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for the group's album "Strange Imaginary Animals." Recorded before she moved to Salem in 2007, Barth performed with the group for a decade before moving to Oregon for a life off the road. Described as "ferociously talented" by The Oregonian, Barth teaches at Willamette University, performs with the Oregon Symphony and the Eugene Symphony, and serves as principal flutist with the Salem Chamber Orchestra. Barth also performs locally with BETA COLLIDE, a leading edge new music ensemble. You can catch BETA COLLIDE in a free recital performance on April 5 at 7 p.m. at Willamette University Hudson Hall.
Mark Lemhouse to expand his horizons
Mark Lemhouse is no stranger to the Salem music scene, or the world at large for that matter. The highly adaptable musician has toured nationally and abroad primarily as a solo artist and also with Larry Norman and members of The Guards of Metropolis. Most recently, Salem band The Nettles have been the backing crew for Lemhouse's American-roots-country-blues sounds. With new songs and more time on his hands, Lemhouse had the itch to put together a permanent band. A recent call to former bandmates drummer Ned Folkerth and harmonica player David Lipkind made it official: Mark Lemhouse and The Lo-Fi Troubadours are back together. Go to marklemhouse.com for news, show dates, pics, and more information.
New clubs on the scene
The Space at 1132 Broadway NE is Salem's newest night spot to hear local punk and indie bands in a casual and intimate setting. Its February 15 opening saw a packed house, featuring bands Mill Race, RootVilla, Office Diving, and Patterns. At present the club is all-ages, and admission is $5. Go to myspace.com/thespaceistheplace for club info and events.
If pub fare and pints are more your speed, then Singley's Bar & Grill at 145 Liberty Street NE is a better bet. Daily appetizer and drink specials, a hearty menu, spacious party loft, and live music offer something for everyone. Open every day 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and family-friendly until 9 p.m. Live music is Saturdays 8 to midnight. Mark Lemhouse and The Nettles will play at Singley's on March 8. Call (503) 588-1880 or visit myspace.com/singleys.

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Potatoe Famine's "Old, Young and Pissed" CD release will coincide with a March 17 gig at Satyricon in Portland. Salem CD party TBA. LeNUNES will release their latest CD "Sunshine and Sadness" at The Blue Pepper Gallery on March 22. Percussionist Mark Powers will join the band and Eugene singer-songwriter Dan Jones will open the show as LeNUNES' special guest.
