Lloyd Chapman turned in the necessary paperwork today at 10 a.m. to run for Mayor of Salem.
Chapman retired from Land Conservation Development Commission where he worked as a network computer administrator. He currently serves as a member of the Transit Board and has been involved with both the Southeast Salem Neighborhood Association and
the Morningside Neighborhood Association.
"I've been involved in civic issues, but not to this extent," Chapman said. "I'm excited. I think it's going to be fun."
Chapman is looking forward to the race, but says that he isn't ready to talk about specific issues yet.
"I'm really only announcing right now," he said.
"I still have a lot of work to get organized."
He did say that he thinks that people feel like they don't have a voice in Salem.
"I think I can provide one," he said.
Chapman received his Masters of Public Administration from Syracuse University, his Bachelors of Science degree in Political Science from Oregon State University and graduated from North Eugene High School.
He lives with his wife, Susan Graves, in Southeast Salem. They have a daughter who recently graduated from University of Oregon. They have lived in Salem for 30 years.
Chapman has agreed to participate in Salem Monthly's upcoming election forum, which will be held on February 26 at Willamette University. The forum is a chance for local candidates to address voters about local issues.
"This is an important election with many issues that concern our quality of life in Salem," said AP Walther, publisher of both Salem Monthly Newspaper and WillametteLive.com. "We can provide a platform for voters to hear directly what the candidates think about those concerns."
For more information on the forum, see the story in this month's issue of Salem Monthly Newspaper.
The primary vote will be held on May 20.
