"Charlie Wilson's War"
Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is an alcoholic womanizer and congressman from Texas. The CIA persuades him to train and arm resistance fights in Afghanistan to battle the Soviet Union. Turning the freedom fighters into a well-oiled military machine has unforeseen and long-reaching ramifications. The movie already has a Golden Globe nomination for "Best Motion Picture"; screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and supporting cast members Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts have also received nominations.
"National Treasure: Book of Secrets"
Treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) is back. He brings his groupies on another ride for long-forgotten government secrets. This time, Gates tries to uncover the mystery behind Lincoln's assassination. Missing pages from John Wilkes Booth's diary leads the gang on a trip to Buckingham Palace, The White House, and Mount Rushmore. Not quite Indiana Jones, but it'll help tide adventure-seekers over until its summer release.
"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story"
The tagline is "Life made him tough. Love made him strong. Music made him hard." It appears that the innuendo even makes it to the movie poster. "Walk Hard" is the mother of all parody music bio-pics, taking jabs at Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, and even for 10 seconds in the film, Buddy Holly. John C. Reilly plays Dewey Cox, a somewhat unintelligent man with an ability to sing. The movie chronicles his life, while mocking musical legends of the past. Read the review here.
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton bring this renowned Broadway musical to the big screen. Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) was outcast from London by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). He returns under the assumed name Sweeney Todd, and opens a barbershop in London. Sweeney Todd is out for revenge, plotting the murder of all of his enemies. His neighbor Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) is out for meat for her Meat Pie Shop. That's where things get a little weird. The movie has already racked up several Golden Globe nominations: Best Director for Tim Burton, Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actor for Johnny Depp, Best Performance by an Actress for Helena Bonham Carter.
