Off Center Cafe a welcome treat during holiday bustle

There's one in every city -- a little neighborhood hotspot that offers great food and funky ambience. We don't share it with anyone but our closest friends for fear it may get too crowded or become commercialized. The Off Center Café is just that place for Salem. Located in a "mini strip" off Center Street, their unassuming sign reads: Coffee Shop. It has survived without big signs or advertising because of its loyal customer base.
The décor is eclectic and features local artists and a `50s retro feel. The service is not rushed so if you have time constraints, Off Center Café may not be your best bet. The sumptuous food, served in generous portions, is what keeps regulars coming back.

The breakfast menu is delightfully hip (as in hippie) and features many vegetarian selections, such as Green Chile Tortoise, which comes with scrambled eggs, corn tortillas, green chilies, avocados, onions, black olives and cheese topped with salsa, all for $7. Scrambled Tofu comes with sautéed tofu and onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, peas, and soy sauce served over potatoes and toast for $7.25. Huevos Off-Centros comes with potatoes or refried beans topped with two eggs, and salsa served with toast or tortillas for $6.

The breakfast menu also features ten different omelets, burritos, freshly squeezed juice, fruit, pancakes and French toast. The menu advertises drug- and hormone-free eggs as well as Oregon-made Tillamook cheese. Two homemade breads are available: orange date and whole wheat, in addition to many other bread choices. There are loads of extras available, too, such as five kinds of hot sauce, raspberry jam on each table, and real maple syrup.

... But you didn't hear any of this from me.

Off Center Café is located at 1741 Center Street. They are open for breakfast Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 11 a.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday they are open from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
