Pink House Cafe offers big time elegance in a small town

The Pink House Café can be found in downtown Independence, where it stands as an example of the growing elegance of small Mid-Valley towns.

The biggest advertisement for the café is the building that contains it. Directly across from Independence’s new cinema, the Pink House Café is difficult to miss. Narrow and delicately pink, it is the house of storybook grandmas - sweet and inviting.

Inside as well as out, the house is an expertly renovated 1870’s home. The owners purchased it in a dilapidated condition from the city, and moved it to make room for the new theater. Then they gave it a rebirth. The atmosphere is meant to be that of grandmother's house, with charming mismatched plates and tasteful old decor. But not the grandma of stale hard candy and uncirculated air. This grandma had class.

The seating is café style, tables and chairs placed around the connecting rooms. The décor is sparse and graceful, dark prints meant to evoke the house’s first prime. It all comes together to form an approachable sophistication. The staff is personable. Patrons are likely to meet the owners of the cafe and can easily believe they have a personal investment in their customers' enjoyment.

In good weather, the renovated house offers three separate dining porches. The views aren’t great, but everyone's too busy looking at the food to mind. The menu is small, the food is simple and light. Ingredients are all of higher-than-standard quality. The chicken in the Greek Chicken Salad, springy and savory. The breads that make the array of offered sandwiches are artisan, the meat that fills them is thick and fresh. Winter seasonal entrees carry a beautiful balance of cozy and chic. Try the butternut squash ravioli with sweet pepper-cayenne sauce, or the Mt. Angel Sausage Co.’s Bratwursts with Applekraut. Try anything, it's all delicious. The Pink House is also one of the only local venues to offer the famous Stumptown coffee.

Within walking distance from the movie theater and Independence shops, the Pink House can provide the dinner for an easy night out. It is equally appropriate for a comfortable romantic breakfast. Atmosphere, ease, and quality food are all waiting inside The Pink House.

The Pink House is located at 242 D Street, in Independence, between 2nd and 3rd Street. It is open Wednesday-Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pink Portions (#1)

Although there are many great places to eat in Independence; the Pink House is certainly one of them. The food is good but the portions are conservative. Taste is on target but you can't help but think, "Please Sir, may I have some more."

I do agree with the article: My wife and I ate at the Pink House the other night and had the most wonderful time. She had the Hungarian Paprikash and I had the Shepherd's Pie, both of which were amazing. The portions were large and the presentation, classy. The house was simply amazing, riddled with intrigue, history and mystery: The friendly waiter told of us recent para-normal investigations which had resulted in significant para-normal findings. Quite the place. Independence needed a place like the Pink House, and my wife and I are so thankful it got one.

Pink House Cafe (#3)

I live in Tangent, a small town in Linn County. I was first invited to the Pink House Cafe for lunch by my cousin. Each serving, whether it was salad or the entree was so exquisitly arranged, that my taste buds knew it would be delicious, as it was. On the other hand, the meal looked so inviting that I just wanted to look at it for a while. I came away fully sated and didn't even need to eat dinner that night. Over a month later, I returned for lunch and not only had the food improved, if that is possible, but the management remembered my name. The customer service is superb and you are treated very special. I will drive the distance any time because it is worth it to know how much they appreciate their customers.

There are many things that make life special... Friends, great food, and that 'special place' are just a few of them. The Pink House Cafe in Independence has all of that and more. The atmosphere is relaxed yet classy, the food is freshly prepared, exquisitely seasoned, beautifully presented, and delicious to the max! And the desserts... Wow! The personnel are professional, yet make you feel completely at home. When it comes to a movie and lunch or dinner - of the two, it's the meal at the Pink House that is most enjoyable! Julie

BEST PLACE TO ENJOY YOURSELF AND FREINDS (#6)

I do not know why the Comment #1 person said the portions are small at the Pink House Café. I have been to the Pink House Café for breakfast, lunch and dinner on several occasions. I hear people all around me telling the servers they can't eat all their meal it was too much and could they have a box to go. The food is excellent with a good variety of entrees, the portions are large and the service is excellent. The café is very clean with a warm friendly feeling about it. This month I reserved a table for 12 people for a birthday party. Our party had the whole room to ourselves. Here are the comments the birthday group said about the café besides the food was fantastic, everyone was stuffed, and they all want to come back again. **They liked that we were able to carry on great conversations without having to talk over the rest of the people in the restaurant, since were had a private room. **Everyone was surprised that both owners (Paul & Young) actually work at the café. The excellent food is prepared by Young and Paul makes sure the customers are taken care to his high standard of customer service. **Everyone took a tour of the house and loved the workmanship and that the house was returned back to being a wonderful 1873 home that has many stories it could tell us if we just visit. **The old fashion desserts brought back memories when they were kids. Thank you Pink House Café for a wonderful evening and you will be seeing all of us again.

My husband and I have traveled the world, and very much enjoy European cuisine and style. The Pink House Cafe offers both. It's simple decor mixes the elegant the antique and the modern in very European way. We simply go there for tea and toast, and it's WONDERFUL! The service is excellent, the food is decadent and it's just a sweet little get away from the mundane.

Very much so... (#8)

I agree with the reviews prior to mine. Owners are very kind. Food is top notch. And to top it off, it's a great place to enjoy your hot beverage (stomptown... need i say more?) and dessert with your friend(s) on a typical NW weather day!
