Whew! Summer's here. While the fans and air conditioners are working overtime, consider hiding from the heat in one of the area's many pools.

Salem has two public swimming pools, Olinger and Walker. At Olinger Pool, visitors can enjoy the indoor pool complete with a 60-foot water slide and a rope swing. Olinger Pool is located at 131 A Street NE. Walker Pool is a better choice for those looking to lap swim and catch some rays. It is located in West Salem at 1075 8th Street NW. Both public swimming pools have open recreation swimming available from 1:30 - 3:15 p.m. and 7:15 - 9 p.m. Monday to Friday. There are extended hours on the weekend with open recreation swimming running from 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. For more information on these pools contact (503) 588-6261.

Both pools offer lessons in five different sessions throughout the summer to children age three and up. Cost is $28 per session. The next two-week session begins July 7. For lesson times and registration contact the pool of your choice.
Dallas Aquatic Center boasts a water slide and fountain. Recently it added a 24-foot rope swing to the fun. Regular admission costs $15, with a $10 in-city price for a family of four. Open swimming hours are available Wednesdays from 4 - 5:45 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 7 - 9 p.m.; Saturday 1:30 - 5 p.m., and Sunday 1:30 - 5 p.m.

In July, moms and toddlers can swim in the Mom's Friday Club from 12 - 1 p.m. Admission is only $2 for both mom and tot. On July 18, adults can swim with low lights and soft music from 9-10 p.m. July 23 is Super Soaker Wednesday, which gives kids the chance to soak lifeguards with a water gun. The Dallas Aquatic Center also offers lessons in 5-week classes for $35 for Dallas residents and $45 for residents outside city limits. The center can be visited at 1005 SE LaCreole Dr in Dallas or contacted at (503) 623-9715.

Salem Family YMCA offers both recreational swimming and lessons during the summer. Five-week session lessons for both members and non-members are available at multiple levels, for age and expertise. Open recreation swimming is available in the main pool on Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 2:15 - 3 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 2:15 - 5 p.m., Saturday 2 - 4 p.m., Sunday 4 - 5:15 p.m., and each weeknight from 8 - 9 p.m. Non-members can purchase a day pass for $12/adult, $4/child or $15/family. The YMCA is located at 685 Court St NE. For more information on the YMCA, visit youry.org.
