Locally made horror film premieres

Many fantasy and horror based movies have been made in Oregon. Recent big screen adaptation, Twilight, was filmed on location in the Portland area and on the Oregon Coast.

However, "Melvin" is a completely home-bred venture. The movie premieres at Northern Lights Theatre Pub on June 19 at 9 p.m.

Henry Weintraub, a Eugene filmmaker, spearheaded the project and returns to the capital for his new feature length film. The new flick was entirely produced in Oregon over the past year and employed the use of over 50 local cast and crew members.

Patrick O'Driscoll and Lloyd Kaufman (Troma Entertainment owner) are principal actors in the film.

The title character is a college student three years post his own accidental murder. "Melvin" follows his thirst for retribution as he seeks out those responsible for his death. Enlisting the help of Norton Pincus, a nerdy student, Melvin leads a spree of regurgitation and decapitation.

Tickets for the screening event are $3 at the door.

If this film leaves you hungry for more, Weintraub's sci-fi comedy "MindSlime" has recently been picked up for distribution by New York-based Troma Entertainment and is set for national release later this ear.

Festival tributes film legend

Try and take a break from the surf and sand to visit the Coaster Theater on 108 N Hemlock during the Second Annual Cannon Beach Film Festival June 5-7.

This year's edition chronicles the career of Paul Newman. From his early 1950's films to his later work, movies such as "Rachel, Rachel," "The Color of Money," and "What a Way to Go," are screened.

Kicking off the festivities, a no-host wine reception is set for Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.

On the festival's final day, at 4 p.m., special speaker Matt Lovre talks about "Sometimes a Great Party." He plans to share the details of the adventures of Newman and the cast when filming the project on the Oregon Coast.

During the festival, all events are free. For more information, contact Cannon Beach History Center and Museum at 503-436-9301.
