Remember all the Styrofoam that came with that brand new stereo? Well, here's your chance to NOT throw it in the landfill. On Saturday, June 14 bring it (and all other Styrofoam that's lying around) to Salem's Styrofoam recycling event. Sponsored in part by Willamette University and Marion County Public Works, this year's collection will be held at Willamette University's Sparks parking lot, located next to the soccer field at the corner of 12th and Bellevue Street. The one-day event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Our office receives calls every day from people and businesses that want to recycle Styrofoam. This one day event will give people the option to recycle it," said Bailey Payne, recycling coordinator for the Public Works Environmental Services Division.

For Saturday's event, clean and dry block packing foams, meat trays, food containers and egg cartons all will be accepted. But leave home foam blocks with tape, construction foam and packing peanuts. Packing peanuts can be reused or donated to your friendly, local mailing store.

According to Susann Kaltwasser, at last year's event ran they out of room in the truck to haul the Styrofoam away, so this time they are going to have four trucks available.

"I am impressed by the company that is helping with this event by providing the trucks for free," she said. "So get the word out that this time there should be enough room for everyone's Styrofoam."

Individuals that would like to be notified of future events can call the County at (503) 588-5169 and ask to be added to the Styrofoam Notification List. The County plans to hold more frequent events and is working to establish a permanent drop-off location for Styrofoam.
