The Pita Pit a welcome addition to downtown

Pitas, pitas and more pitas -- chicken Caesar, gyro, Baba Ganoush. Who knew there were so many different kinds of pita sandwiches? Actually, the The Pita Pit, the newest addition to downtown Salem's restaurant scene, offers sandwiches that end up more like a wrap or a burrito than a typical pita.

On your first visit you may be overwhelmed with the extensive choices. First pick up a menu at the counter and choose your meat, or one of their vegetarian options such as hummus, falafel or feta cheese. After you place your order, the cook will add your meat to the open grill.

Then choose pita bread, vegetables, cheese and sauce. Cheese can be melted on your meat or added later. Vegetable choices include a variety of lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, peppers, cucumbers, onions, sprouts, pickles and pineapple. Cheese options include cheddar, swiss and feta. The assortment of sauces includes tzatziki, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, "secret" sauce, mustard, honey mustard, Dijon, teriyaki, Caesar, ranch, and salsa.

While your meat is grilling, your vegetables are packed into the pita bread, and topped with the sauce you chose. By the time this is done, your meat is done cooking and is placed on top of the vegetables. The cooks manage to fit considerably more into these sandwiches than you might think. And watching them prepare it is half the fun.

On both my visits to The Pita Pit, my order came back perfectly cooked and very flavorful. I recommend that you arrive hungry and grab plenty of napkins.

The Pita Pit also serves salads and smoothies made with fresh fruit and yogurt, as well as breakfast pitas. The Pita Pit delivers, and orders can be placed online for pick up or delivery at orpitapits.com.  They are located at 524 State Street and their hours are Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.
