The Roxxy Moves Into Lefty's space in Salem
By Jason Gooder
from WillametteLive, Section Music / Nightlife
Posted on Sun Feb 01, 2009 at 12:37:59 PM PDT

There will be a new club opening up in the space vacated by Lefty’s, on 1230 State Street. Whereas Lefty’s specialized in blues music, Roxxy Nightclub and Pizzeria, scheduled to open on February 1, will have a wider scope.

Jeff Schutt, who along with his businees partner, Russell Moenich are launching Roxxy.

In addition to blues music, Schutt says, there will be rock and roll, and a house DJ, live band karaoke, and some old-school dancing and funk. He is also planning jazz jams and open guitar sessions. It will be a priority to book aspiring local bands.

On the non-musical entertainment side, Roxxy will to bring in multi-talented acts, such as comedians. Sundays will be movie, pizza and a beer night.

Roxxy will be an all-encompassing building that seats just fewer than 300 patrons in the main room with a stage and full service restaurant and bar. Pizza, appetizers, calzones, and spaghetti are just some of the menu items planned. There will also be a lounge where they can book smaller parties. The whole space will be open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. It will be 21 and over after 8 p.m.

Taking over the vacancy left by Lefty's, the new club may be in competition other downtown nightlife venues.

“Competition’s good. Never look at that as a negative," Schutt said. "It’s good for the city; it’s good for the industry. I come from Detroit and Ohio where there’s thousands of bands and hundreds of clubs. We’re all working for the same goal to try to make something good happen for the city.”

Schutt previously worked as manager at Stars Cabaret's former location on Pine St. in Salem and currently manages 11 clubs across the country. Although he currently lives in Arizona, he plans to reside in Oregon again soon.

Schutt is optimistic about the future of the Roxxy and the positive effect it will have on Salem.

“We have a wonderful new president coming in who wants to try to re-grow the economy. This is a wonderful chance to give some people some employment, give the city some tax base, and make it more of a thriving community artistically and food wise," Schutt said. "Our focus is absolute fun and hospitality. We want everyone walking out that door thinking they had a heck of a good time and we want our employees to be ambassadors of our venue, feeling very proud of their work and not feeling like it’s another day in the office.”

Jason Stringer, current booker of Salem music venue The Space shared his thought about the state of Salem's nightclub venues.

“They [Lefty's] had good pizza and they brought in some good acts, but in a town that’s smaller I think you need to be a bit broader with your music," Stringer said. "Maybe there’s only a certain amount of people in Salem who want to go out to a blues show and if you’re having blues music four nights a week, you’re not going to get that crowd four nights in a row; they’re going to be dispersed over them. Maybe if you have a blues show, then a jazz show, then a classic rock band ... you don’t have to delve into every style of music like we do but you just have to be a little bit more broad.”

Stringer doesn’t see a threat to the Space’s survival from Roxxy.

“As much as the Space tries to be broad, it caters mostly to 20 or 30 somethings. I think it has an image that scares some people off," Stringer said. "I can see some bands crossing over, but for the majority of our acts I don’t think they would be playing at the same place. It’s a totally different vibe. The more music that’s going on in this town, it probably helps us out. We’re not threatened. With the Ike Box having better shows, it helps us out because it brings more awareness of the scene.”

With its open house held on January 20th to hire a new staff, Roxxy only needs approval from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to obtain its liquor license permit.

I'm looking forward to seeing the shows that Roxxy books. Salem has such diverse music sounds and it's always good when we get additional venues to showcase our local bands. I wish Roxxy and our existing venues in town much success! - Cindy (Salem Music Scene)

ENTERTAINMENT AND THE SALEM MUSIC SCENE (#5)
by Anonymous on Tue Feb 10, 2009 at 05:06:17 PM PDT
As you open your new business venture in the once Great Lefty's Blues Club. Be aware that the Salem blues crowd will be watching with high aspirations and expectations. Lefty's was once referred to as giving Salem CPR in the entertainment business. We expect you to give it another life saving "Shock". For the most part Salem is pretty much burned out on the Locals in blues. That's not to say they're not good musicians. But we're tired of listening to the same stuff over and over. So bring on some of those greats from outside Salem, like CoCo Montoya, Lydia Pence,Grace Potter, Elvin Bishop and more to name a few. Make Salem the place to go to for Grat Blues. If Albany can do it. Surely the State Captiol can as well.

Roxxys (#6)
by JGz Productions on Tue Feb 10, 2009 at 05:20:02 PM PDT
I am confidant after meeting both owners of Roxxys they do well, it seems i hear so many sceptical comments about the type of music fearing it will not be quality entertainment and be caterign young people, salem is starving for good qualitly entertainment and a place to relax other than the typical sports bar / tavern atmosphere, like the old Leftys. we all loved the format, and big names that appeared and thanked the Grahamns for that. Th other issue that keeps coming up is because jeff was a manager of Stars, which in my opinion is a high class establishment, is that Roxxys will turn into another strip club. well like ive said i met both owners and we visited on this same subject i truly beleive that their intentions to bring quality live entertainment to Salem will be proven. Thanks.

by Anonymous on Fri Feb 13, 2009 at 02:20:10 PM PDT
Personally I am glad you are having The Ty Curtis band there...they play great blues, pop and rock. I know they are not the only band you have playing there so I do think the variety is good too! I am glad Lefty's building get Roxxy's new facelift. Best wishes to ROXXY and the Grand Opening!

Why is it so hard to get a phnoe # for roxxy?? (#1 (#16)
by Anonymous on Thu Feb 26, 2009 at 07:13:01 PM PDT
Because, to be completely honest, it seems that Roxxy's may be open to the public but very unsure and incapable of getting out their own word. I hope they learn how to promote before they start to buy more places in Salem and that they learn that Salem needs more than just a bunch of Hip hop clubs and Pizza joints.

contact info (#17)

for example:what is the phone number of The Roxxy? Do they have a website?

They definately need to set up a website. The SJ has had some ads that I'm sure the restaurant must have paid for. They have a good lunch special at a reasonable price. I am anxious to check out the night scene there.

So,how are we supposed to know if there are any curtis selgado tickets left? The roxxy has no ph# listing ....at all... We cant buy tickets if we dont know how to get them.

I heard the Killer Bee's will be coming to the Roxxy. I havnt been to your club yet,but i will be going to see the bee's. Cant wait!

No web site for show listings? You kidding? (#23)
by Anonymous on Wed Apr 01, 2009 at 09:31:24 PM PDT
I have searched the calendar here, at the Statemesman, for a web site... STILL no web site with show listings. Are these people TRYING to make it hard for people to know what's going on? Sounds like a very short sighted project to me. Yes, I called -- and listened to their poor quality answering machine that droned on for way longer than I needed just to find out what's going on. Get with the 20th century, people! You might want to take note of other new but thriving businesses who are using online media (web sites, blogs, twitter) to their advantage!

They do have a myspace page. (#24)
by Anonymous on Thu Apr 02, 2009 at 08:31:21 AM PDT
I called the venue and instead of getting the machine w/ the lineup, I got the kitchen staff who didn't know where to call to get venue info but DID give me the URL for their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/salemroxxy As with most things on Myspace it's incredibly hard to read and gather information from, it's juveline (the creator lists themselves as female and 69)and ugly. It's awful, almost unreadable. And, of course, there is NO information about the comedy night they are supposed to be having tonight. I'm going somewhere else.

Don't waste your time (#25)
by Anonymous on Wed Apr 15, 2009 at 01:23:28 PM PDT
I went there on Monday to see their Jazz night. The only good thing about it was the music. There was only one server and the place was packed. She was really friendly, there was just too much for one person to handle. You would think they would plan ahead if they are going to have an event at their establishment and have more than one server. Took 1/2 hour to get a hummus plate and over an hour to get a pizza! I am not exaggerating. Then, the pizza was not even good...it's like they had let it just sit in the oven the whole hour we waited. Plus, everything is extremely overpriced. I think the owner must think his is in some major metropolitan city or something, instead of in Salem. We will not be going back.

Saw the killer bees w/bill rhoads on friday night. (#26)
by Anonymous on Sun Apr 19, 2009 at 05:57:22 AM PDT
My wife and i went roxxy nightclub to see the killer bees on friday night and we were also going to meet up with another couple of our friends who were going to see the killer bees. What a great show!the place was packed but we did manage to get table. The best thing about the evening was the band. The club atmosphere and service was ok, but the band sounded great! we were all very pleased with the show.

Please someone else write the article. (#27)
by Anonymous on Thu Apr 23, 2009 at 11:12:40 PM PDT
To the article writer: Jason Gooder, have you heard of spellchecker? Do you understand grammar and basic sentence structure? Your article was horrible to read. I had only hoped that this establishment was better then your review. I was mistaken. To the rest: This "club" is worse then Star's when on Pine or Hawthorne for service and entertainment. Leave it to a previous strip club manager to go into club ownership. And when one of the managers is not even local but hopes to move back....please that is just asking for trouble. Salem has seen these exact same reproduced cloned clubs time and time again. Nothing changes with them and to be honest I do not think we will ever see a truly great club here. Save yourselves the time and drive to Portland, you will pay the same in gas anyway.

So wheres the variety?? (#28)
by Anonymous on Tue Apr 28, 2009 at 03:20:33 AM PDT
I have been to the club a couple of times now to see a couple of differnt bands. The problem with this area is a couple or a few of the bands here in salem are WAYYYY over played .We all know the bands i am talking about.I guess there is nothing wrong with phamous faces band or the ty curtis band, but come on guys...there are way better bands around here that bring new people to clubs and not the same old "groupy" friends that follow those bands. That leads me to believe that the club ONLY cares about the buck and "favoritism". Its really being noticed guys.Thats the problem with many bands in the area..THEY ARE OVER PLAYED AND SATURATING..It really does loose its magic after you see them for the Umfteen time. So wheres the variety? There is Absolutely NO reason to play the same band 2 times in a month. Is roxxy that unimaginative or unaware of how to run a club. It seems like the good bands i have seen play, arnt even listed to play future dates and all of the same ol same ol bands that have already worn out there welcome around here, keep playing there week after week.I dont get it?? People are really getting fed up with it. What can you expect from a strip club mantality.

Phone # or web site (#29)
by Anonymous on Tue May 05, 2009 at 05:43:51 PM PDT
Does any one know the phone # or a web site to get info?

so where's the variety (#30)
by Anonymous on Sun May 10, 2009 at 01:34:52 PM PDT
Anonymous # 28 says "That leads me to believe that the club ONLY cares about the buck and "favoritism". There are a lot more places to hear music in Salem than there used to be.....and if they want to stay in business, they have to care about the buck.... You sound bitter about someone else having some small amount of success....rather than tearing someone down, maybe you should put some energy into building up support for the "way better bands around here" that you talk about.

behavior amoung customers (#31)
by Anonymous on Wed May 13, 2009 at 06:38:10 PM PDT
a friend and i went to roxxy's not to long after they opened and was appalledat what they were allowing to go on in front of the other customers.a group of young people were sitting in the corner with other friends when one of the girls was sitting on the lap of her boy friend i guess , if they weren't having sex i beg to differ with you it was disgusting. we left and i am not sure if we will ever be back. i can't beleive it was allowed to continue as long as it did. to the owners of roxxy's don't you have any more pride in your establishment than that . anonymous

What a huge dissapointment (#32)
by Anonymous on Thu May 14, 2009 at 08:41:37 AM PDT
This place totally deserves to go out of business, and the sooner the better. Then somebody else can open up a music venue that actually cares about doing it right. What a waste, I'm truly saddened.

I agree (#33)
by Anonymous on Sat Jul 04, 2009 at 04:58:48 AM PDT
i think the club is poorly ran. i just heard that the owner has already sold it again. in 4 months time.nobody there knows what there doing. No Body. What a disapointment.

Roxxy is worthless (#35)
by Anonymous on Tue Aug 04, 2009 at 06:46:04 PM PDT
I was appaled at the other co workers.... for example the bartender dan doing lines of coke in the bathroom or the drunken slurred words of various other employees..... lets not forget the female servers sitting in the corner talking and not checking up on the customers.... hopefully the place picks up

ha ha ha ha (#36)
by Anonymous on Wed Aug 05, 2009 at 08:40:15 PM PDT
your all a bunch of fucking haters. the roxxy is going to be big and you all can go blow your selfs. wow you guys really have nothing better to do than talk shit..

How to fix it (#37)
by Anonymous on Fri Aug 07, 2009 at 01:25:32 PM PDT
You have a great room, you just need a good booker. They come cheap... steal one from Portland. $1,500 a month would buy you the Doug Fir/Berbati's Pan level of guy or gal (their job is to bring 100-300 people EVERY NIGHT). $1,500 a month to turn a crap club into something amazing. Sounds like a bargain to me. Lots of people will book for free (or next to nothing) but they usually aren't any good, or burn out quickly (because they have to hold down another job). Who ever figures this out, wins.

CONFUSIA (#38)
by Anonymous on Fri Aug 07, 2009 at 09:45:06 PM PDT
We were told the owners were thriving. Then again our corportation was thrown into a insane state of turmoil while Schutt incharge. We are still experiencing some unwanted loose bowel like sensations due to his ignorant logic. WHAT IS, ISN'T WHAT IT IS = JS

So... what happened? (#39)
by Anonymous on Wed Nov 04, 2009 at 04:07:55 PM PDT
Roxxy is dead and gone already. What the hell?

Guess they weren't thriving, huh? (#40)
by Anonymous on Fri Nov 13, 2009 at 04:07:18 PM PDT
Given they are shuttered, looks like Roxxy wasn't thriving. Where's THIS story, I wonder?

Hey I know things didnt go as planned...and yeah the club is closed. I have two things to say though. 1. Don't hide behind some computer and call out an owner. You and I both know there were things out of our control to fix (and that is why the club went out of business). Yes David can be held liable for that; being the owner; but remember David is also the one who lost his ass on the club and venture in whole...not you! 2. Dont hide behind a silly Screen alias "former employee" if you dont want to be known, then be smart and leave your name anonymous. Hence if you have balls to say what you feel, then add your name, and quit making all former employees look bad. Danny
