Two Independence women have teamed up to offer the public "Wine and Wildlife" Memorial Day weekend tours to Polk County wineries. Cheryl Gaston, owner of Independence House Bed & Breakfast, and Gail Oberst, a long-time writer and fifth-generation Oregonian, will host up to 10 people each on two separate tours to wineries May 26 to 28.

Those who join the tour will have the option of staying at Independence House two nights, Friday and Saturday for the tour on Saturday; or Sunday only. Four seats in each of the two tours will be available to those who just want to enjoy the tour, but who don't want to stay overnight.
Both overnight packages include a full breakfast, a guided tour of three wineries, luxury overnight accommodations and a picnic lunch during the tour.
The two-night package also includes a wine and hors d'oeuvres welcome social on Friday night. Two-night package costs are $320 per room (one or two per room). One-night packages are $220 per room. Those only joining the tour pay $50 each.
Independence House B&B is a two-story Italianate house in historic Independence. Gaston serves up style and comfort in three upstairs guest rooms. Oberst will lead the small tour group on Saturday and Sunday to three very different wineries that surround the Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge. In addition to learning about the wines that come from this unique region, those who join the tour also will see some of the birds and wildlife that flock to the marshes, woodlands and fields in the region.

"This is just a relaxing way to sample some great wine, see the countryside and let someone else do the driving," Gaston said.

Gaston and Oberst are launching the tour packages for the first time on Memorial Day weekend. Other tour dates will be posted at independencehousebb.com. More information is available by calling Cheryl Gaston at (503) 838-0612.
