The next season of Big Brother began earlier tonight. Julie Chen returns to host, despite the overall dislike of her by vocal Big Brother fans. She has her moments; but with the invention of DVR if she gets too annoying you can just fast forward. This season is the first time in many years that the contestants are complete strangers. It is also a breath of fresh air after last season's horrible "love connection" gimmick.
But don't worry, the stereotypes are definitely in play. There's the old guy, the slutty girl, the prissy girl, the teacher, the mom, the prudish Christian, the country guy with a gay twist, and the crazy lady. There is some built-in controversy with political differences among the guests and the preacher's son conflicting beliefs with the environment of the Big Brother house.
This season started with the twist that the Head of Household (who controls who gets nominated to go home each week) was chosen before the houseguests entered the house.
Isn't it great that Dan, the Catholic school teacher, is already prepared to sin in the Big Brother house? Luckily he can just step into a booth and fix all of that. There's a big difference between the preacher's son Ollie and Dan already. Of course, Ollie has already fallen in love with the first prissy blonde who sat by him.
The first competition resulted in Memphis, the "mixologist" receiving a classic car. And more importantly, his team won real food. In Big Brother, the houseguests compete for food. If they do not win the challenge, they eat a vitamin concoction that looks like runny oatmeal. In BB, they call it "slop."
Jerry, the groping grandpa, was nominated by his houseguests to become Head of Household. The game play started a little earlier this season too. Each HoH gets a customized room and a care package from home. With the perks comes the curse of being the first person to send someone home.
Alliances are the name of the game in Big Brother and this season Jerry wants to form an alliance with Brian because of their military backgrounds. Of course, as it always happens, Brian is already hooked up with Dan in an alliance. The alliances have started very quickly this season, we'll see how long they stay together. Jesse and Renny have been put up on the block for nomination, which means that Jerry held up his side of the bargain with Brian.
The first episodes of most shows are hard to follow -- there are a whole lot of introductions to get in within the hour timeslot. But it does look like this cast will be a lot more interesting than winter's cast.
On Wednesday, the veto competition will be held. Whoever wins the veto competition can override Jerry's nominations.
"Watching Big Brother" will follow this season of Big Brother every night the show airs on CBS.
