WillametteLive.com chooses reCAPTCHA for spam prevention

Earlier this month, we announced that we disabled anonymous comments. Since then, we've listened to your feedback and have continued working on alternative ways to allow community participation, while protecting ourselves spam.

Disabling anonymous comments prevented spam, but it added an extra step of complicity to our real, human, posters.

After a couple weeks of research, we found: "reCAPTCHA". reCAPTCHA is a generated image that requires users to type in a couple of words to verify that they are human. You've probably seen CAPTCHAs before; they are generally hard to read and not accessible to users that are visually impaired. In fact, we originally ruled out CAPTCHA for that reason. But reCAPTCHA offers an "audio challenge" option that visually impaired users can use. (Speaker Icon) It's also possible to "reload" the reCAPTCHA if you are unable to make out the words. (Arrow icon)

We also have made changes in the way that you post comments. If you scroll down on this page, you'll see the comment form and the reCAPTCHA. Simply fill out the information that it requests, then the reCAPTCHA and click POST THIS COMMENT. The comment will be automatically added to the story that you are reading. If you are not logged in, the comment will be posted as "Anonymous." You are also able to login or sign-up on any story page if you have signed up for an account. This is not necessary to post a comment, but it is encouraged. Try it out, and happy commenting!

 POST A COMMENT

Your opinion matters! This is your chance to add to the story and voice your opinion. Links are welcome and encouraged.

We also encourage you to register an account and to login prior to posting comments. However, this is not required to post a comment. If you are not logged in, the comment will be posted as "Anonymous."
