With the annual Salem Film Festival behind us until next year, fans of independent films will be pleased to hear that producer/director David Earnhardt is bringing his film "Uncounted" to the Grand Theatre on May 8 for the monthly Salem Progressive Film Series.

"Uncounted" is a horror movie -- not in the Freddy Krueger way, but about how our country's democracy is in jeopardy. And much of it, the film submits, is due to the way our elections are being modernized. Voters are turning out in record numbers, and the organization behind the elections is not handling the stress well. In "Uncounted" the clear target is paperless electronic voting machines, particularly the ones made by Diebold.

The film is made up of mostly candid interviews with leading experts in voting machines, poll workers, investigative journalists who have covered this issue, and elected officials. Many elections are covered beginning with the obvious 2000 election inaccuracies taking a key role. But that's not the only election that was muddied with possible fraud. The 2004 elections are covered as well, specifically the problems in Ohio. Most of the focus is on those elections, but the film also points out that the 2006 elections had its problems as well.

The pacing of the film is extremely well done.

Very rarely can these types of films keep interviews interesting, but it's clear that the folks at Salem Progressive Film Series have chosen one of the best for this topic. Along with the film's director, Marion County Clerk Bill Burgess will be speaking after the film.

The Salem Progressive Film Series takes place every second Thursday of each month at the Historic Grand Theater's Grand Ballroom located at 191 High Street NE in Salem. The film starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 or $2 for students with student ID.
